5.10.15 - WARDOWN PARK BANDSTAND PLANS –meeting tonight, High Town Methodist Church, 49 High Town Road, Luton, LU2 0BW

It has come to our attention that a public meeting is being held about the bandstand proposals this evening. It comes after Luton Rotarians decided to revise their plans, following public pressure.

Extract from Luton Herald & Post article (1.10.15): ‘Luton Friends of Parks & Green Spaces, Luton Friends of the Earth and Luton Green Party have organised a public gathering on Monday at High Town Methodist Church to gauge public opinion on the Rotary Bandstand project… will take place between 6.15pm and 8pm.’

NB. The Friends of High Town decided to remain neutral on the project, as our monthly meeting was equally divided about the proposals. Instead, FoHT members made their views known individually through the planning application consultation.

10.9.15 - NEWS - Morrisons will not be opening a convenience store in High Town after all, it appears. The supermarket announced yesterday that it would be selling its 140 ‘M Local’ shops, but FoHT has learned that Morrisons is keeping any unopened premises and putting them on the market.

Planning permission and an alcohol licence were granted for an M Local in the old Noah shop at 11-15 High Town Road, and some refurbishment has taken place. We were initially led to believe that it would open in the autumn, but the plc then told us that this was on hold until a review of all its shops was completed.

That review resulted in yesterday’s sell-off, but it was not clear what that meant for the as yet unopened M Local in High Town. A Morrisons spokesman told FoHT that while he could not speak about individual stores, all premises in their portfolio that have not yet opened remain part of the plc. He went on to say that Morrisons will look to market all such sites, to “reassign the lease”.

While we will not find out whether an M Local would have a positive effect on High Town Road, it looks like an opportunity for someone to rent a fairly large building, one which has already been refurbished in keeping with the Conservation Area.
